| The following passage was written by Michelle Chan: 當一個很有理想0既法律系碩士生, 遇上一個好有想像力0既女記者. 個結果會係以下0既一編entry. FOREWORD i met Matt young in summer 1996, at a british council's preparation course for first formers.i was only 12 that year, and hong kong was still a colony. i could still rmb the name of our tutor, she was a young, blonde, british lady called emma black. she said she was only 24. i,together with some tens of other kids were seperated into 3 groups, and arranged to be seated in 3 different tables. I was arranged to seat in between two boys, the one on my left, he didn't hv an english name, emma black called him Ip, his last name. he was very incooperative, and anti-social. i think that guy was 1-2 yrs older than i did, he looked like an adolescent while we were still kids. the other kid who sat on my right, was m.young. he looked cute when i first met him: bright-eyed, sweet smile, cotton tee shirts, shorts made of same material, white socks and a pair of double-coin brand canvas shoes.{he told me he still loved sneakers when he was 22} i was a bit taller than he was. he was nice, humourous and talkative. and so do i. when two very talkative people sat together, they had too much to talk about, and i learned that he just graduated from st.joseph's primary school, where my younger brother was enrolled in since 1992. sometimes he came to class with his table-tennis rackets, and he said he just finished his table-tennis practice at nearby wanchai sports center. i had no idea why i was so interested to learn about this person so i dug up my bro's sch magazine "green and white junior" to look for his info. perhaps i was secretly admiring him yet i was too young to realize what love was at the age of 12. we were both kids. the course only last for merely 6 weeks, and i lost contact with him since then. i really didn't know why i was so stupid for not asking his contacts while everybody were signing people's autographs at the end of the course. But i did keep track on his updates at SJC. i read my cousin's sch magazine, just to check if he still played table tennis. when my bro was admitted to sjc in 1998, third former matthew young already gave up his table tennis and was converted to a volleyball player, sometimes he also played basketball. i knew my bro and my6 were acquainted with the same group of basketball ppl at sjc. i still didn;t know why i didn't ask for his contact at this point, i thought he'd already forgotten who i was, 2 years after the completion of the course. not long after i learned i was connected to Young thru my bro, my6 , liked many of the josephians who came from bourgeoise family, was sent to further their studies overseas. i hvn't heard any news abt this person since then thanks to the invention of friendster, a then popular cyber networks for people to get to know mutual friends, that i finally got in touch with MY6 again. In august 2004, while i was checking my bro's frdster acct, i discovered my6 was amongst one of the dozens of frds that gary chan had added. i clicked and viewed some of his pix. he looked cute as we met 8 years ago. i sent him a msg, telling him those bits and pieces of old memories that we'd once shared during the 6-week-course at the british council: emma black, his cotton tee-shirt,table-tennis rackets, double-coin canvas shoes...and i realised that he had not forgotten me. we added each other in msn and icq. and updated our lives a bit. he was doing law at exeter, uk. At that time he was still unsured of whether he should do a PCLL in hku or at the uk, or a LLM. He met a hong kong girl{now his wife, Yvonne Young (1984 - )} at a restaurant while buying his takeaway meal and they started dating each other not long after their first encounter. He spent hours to travel from exeter to london during weekends just to meet his gf who was majoring psychology at Westminster. I was a part-time documentary reporter at tvb when all these were taking place. i told him how i got yelled at, and how stinky i smelled after filming at the landfill. he seemed excited to learn about my life as a reporter, and i was also glad to know that this guy'd found a girl whom he'd poured all his love into. MY6 returned to hong kong in 2006 for a LLM at the chinese university of hong kong. the rest of the story need not to tell, we've read too much from the papers. His early life and roads to prominence had long been popular plotlines adapted by novelists and playwrights in books and movies. Amanda Strag's Forever Young sold over a million copies worldwide and had been translated into seven languages including Spanish, Ethiopian, Nigerian, as well as Norwegian. I'll Get The Job Done( 2036 ) directed by NCW, starring Gary Chan and Fay Sing, cleaned up the Cannes, as well as the Berlin Film Festival, he been hailed as an sian Hero? In this book, more than 50 people were interviewed, from m.young's basketball aquaintances, to teachers at st.joseph's, alumni at chaterhouse and exeter, to his CPPCC golf pals, which include tycoons and influential figures inthe SAR's political and business scenes. Through the words of these people, we got to understand the life of our leader more than just regular and boring stories we'd come across on the political pages of the papers. Last but not least, I would like to express my heartfelt-thanks to the protagonist of this book, Matthew Young, for his years of effort in safeguarding the press freedom in Hong Kong, as a former journalist , i see this as Young's gift to Hong Kong: not only the media, but everyone who lives in this city.
